Early Learning Center at Henderson E. Formey School

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA

Greenline Architecture partnered with Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to oversee a comprehensive renovation of the Early Learning Center at Henderson E. Formey School. Originally constructed in 1989, it transitioned to an early learning facility in 2019. The district’s goal: to elevate one of its largest campuses into a modern, vibrant space dedicated to pre‑K and early elementary students.

The renovation focused on creating a vibrant, developmentally appropriate environment tailored to young learners. Interiors feature bright, playful color schemes, soft yet durable materials, and abundant natural light to foster a welcoming and engaging atmosphere. Classrooms and shared spaces were redesigned to support flexible learning, integrating areas for STEM exploration, media engagement, and collaborative instruction. A newly reconfigured cafetorium accommodates school gatherings and performances, while the upgraded media center incorporates modern furnishings and digital infrastructure to enhance literacy and technology integration. Both indoor and outdoor play areas were enhanced, including the addition of an indoor soft-play gym equipped with slides, sensory features, and equipment to support physical activity and social-emotional growth.

This renovation goes beyond aesthetics—it reimagines early childhood education by creating environments that inspire curiosity, support development, and promote a sense of belonging from the very first day of school. Thoughtful design choices help foster creativity, exploration, and confidence, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning in a space where students feel safe, supported, and excited to grow.
